Perception Lecture Response

How Do You See Yourself and The World ?
The lecture about Perception was very interesting and quickly caught my attention. In class we discussed perception as it relates to Blanche in the play A Streetcar Named Desire. Perception is simply defined as how we see ourselves and the way that others see us. Blanche perceives her reality through a fantasy that she has created as a result of her unfortunate life and the truth that she cannot survive her reality. She would do anything to transform from her broken, fractured, vulnerable self to feeling whole, secure and loved again. I felt that sometimes people’s reality and life circumstances are so difficult that they would do anything to not look damaged inside, even though they are conflicted and torn inside. That leads them to hide away from reality and live in this bubble which makes them feel less in denial and able to cope with everything that is going on in their lives. It is also a frustrating situation for Blanche because when she is trying to piece herself together and make herself feel complete in her mind, people like Stanley get in the way because he wants her to see the realistic version of her life. It also showed me that people will go very far to get what they want and not think of how it would impact the other person.
